Harbor Seal
Phoca vitulina
Best Time Year-round (Pups in June)
Status Protected (Marine Mammal Protection Act)
Harbor seals are the most common marine mammal in Maine. While they are year-round residents, they are most visible in summer when they haul out on rocks to warm up. They are incredibly curious and will often pop their heads up (“bottling”) to watch boats and kayakers.
